How to Bookmark the Current Page in Chrome

17 September 2008 32 Comments

Now that you have a convenient Delicious bookmark in Chrome, you are ready for all your social bookmarking needs. But what about traditional bookmarking?

It took me a minute to figure this one out, as Google has broken normal menu conventions. Chrome’s bookmark toolbar doesn’t have an obvious ‘Add Current Page’ function. They’ve hidden it in a very clever place.
Look for the star:

Chrome's Star Icon Bookmarks the Current Page

It looks familiar, right? You can also find these stars on Gmail.

It seems like Google is challenging Microsoft’s conventions by removing the File > Edit > View menu. You probably won’t want to learn a new set of menu placements for every new application, but once in a while it is good to refresh your thinking about these things that you used to take for granted.
What do you think? Do you prefer the new Stars or the old Bookmarks drop-down menu?

After I was 6 and the best car game couldn’t go backwards, new and new software came. All was logical.
Computers were always logical and magical, coz one thing could be many.

    I want 10 programs with 10 ways.

It was only when the net came and stupid broken down programs like adobe reader edited itself like it was one of it’s subjects, a document. Reader has options in edit menu. Stupid. It’s an editor and an editor only. Doesn’t allow to think or do, just edit, and close. I would add delete.

And now with modern internet useful and obligatory applications are made by people who don’t think logically, coz they are amateurs. Broken down logic everywhere. Where 1 thing was 100 things now all piece of crap ppl write garbage that breaks down your logic and you look perplexed when inside a computer 1 things is 2.

    God I hate people.

After I add the bookmark using the star(bookmark this page) where does it go? I don’t see the bookmark in the toolbar or anywhere else.

You know, I have been trying to figure this out for a week LOL I recently switched over from firefox (began to be wayyy to slow) and I was about to give up on chrome because I couldn’t bookmark a page- I never thought to look for a darn star!

    Thanks so much!!!

BTW- I do prefer the star, less clicking on my end to bookmark a page!

You should be able to right click so you don’t have to go up to the star. Many of us primarily use KEYBOARDS and KEYBOARD short cuts because we have the scars of carpal tunnel and try to avoid MORE RSI from going back and forth to the mouse and moving the mouse more than needed. I use ion window manager and only bat the mouse around to switch focused windows on the current desktop…having to cover that much real estate for something that should be accesible with a quick hand to the mouse and right click selection makes a difference to me as the mouse isn’t always at the top of the web page. Yeah, I could use a track ball, but batting a mouse around the desk works better for me WITH RIGHT CLICK MENUS.

    Good browser otherwise.

i think this is genius though a little frustrating before i looked it up
its genius because it forces people to look it up gets people to do some research and actually use the internet instead of becoming mechanical and just using the internet for Myspace, gossip, mail, and games.

It’s all the same in the end. You learn it once and click something to achieve your goal.

Very poor design by Google. I’d be ashamed if I were them seeing a page like this.

  • Bob said:

Since when, and for whom, does a star mean “Bookmark this page”? It doesn’t. Arbitrary, non-intuitive nonsense. They may as well have used a picture of a book! Oh, no, wait, that might actually be taken by many people to mean, “Bookmark this page.” I think this is why I don’t use Chrome much. Almost everything I want to do I have to search for an answer online. It’s quicker than trying every item on a menu. What’s wrong with a full head of Menus and buttons up there. I’m using Sea Monkey right now, and it’s all there clearly visible, and it’s faster than Chrome, and the header takes up no more space than Chrome’s spartan thing.

  • pieter said:

Come on guys, you’re all lame.. Google uses the star throughout all their software/services as representing a kind of ‘add as favourite’ icon. And they aren’t the first to use a star either. I didn’t see it before but hey, thats one of the reasons chrome is so damn nice, there’s very little clutter which makes the interface clean.. and bob, if it was a book firstly it would look gross and secondly it might make certain confused people like yourself think it’s to book for a movie. clown.

THANKS! I have recently switched to Chrome from Firefox because of speed issues, and the one thing that REALLY annoyed me was the apparent lack of bookmarking a new page. Appreciate the help.
